Chakra 1 - Muladhara

Chakra I is found at the base of the spine and is the root chakra. It's represented by the colour red and a 4 petal lotus flower. The sense of smell is associated with Chakra 1. Think of the wonderful aroma of ginger, cloves and cedar. All earthy grounding smells. It's psycholgical function is connected to the "fight or flight response", feeling at home in the body and connection with Mother Earth.

The yogic path for Chakra 1 is Hatha Yoga, so it is natural to find a grounding point in each yoga pose as you practice. Yoga poses for this chakra are Tadasana (the Mountain), Bridge and all sitting poses. To release energy found at Chakra 1, a root release pose is helpful. A modified knees to chest is a good root release pose. To do this pose:

  • Lie on your back on the floor
  • Bend the knees, lifting the feet from the floor
  • Holding the knees with the palms of the hands, exhale and press down
  • Allow the hips and lower back to relax and become grounded
  • Keep the knees, thighs and hips in line with each other
  • Breathe and hold for a few moments
  • Relaxing make circles with the knees, massaging the lower back
  • Release the pose and lie flat on the floor and relax

This Chakra 1 release can be done between other poses during your practice or on it's own to release tension. When practicing this Chakra 1 pose you can say an affirmation to yourself like; "I'm aware that the energy of the universe is constantly flowing through me."

Other ways to enjoy a connection to Chakra 1 are earth or home based. Think dancing in your bare feet, camping, gardening or cooking for family.
